Character biography
Abumi Zaku, part of a team with Dosu Kinuta and Kin Tsuchi, is an arrogant, proud genin who stubbornly refuses to give up, even at the cost of his arms. This Sound-nin had a difficult life as an orphan, and was beaten regularly for stealing food to survive. Orochimaru then took him in because he "liked" Zaku's angry, proud eyes.
Zaku likely had special surgery in his arms, giving him the ability to use his Zankuuha, a powerful jet of air that can destroy rock and rip flesh. Although powerful, it has a glaring weakness, and that is that it is clogged easily, as Zaku found out during his fight with Aburame Shino.
Zaku fought proudly as a representative of the Sound Village, but was sadly discarded like a pawn, as Orochimaru coldly stated. Orochimaru sacrificed him and Kin Tsuchi in order to resurrect the First and Second Hokages during his fight with the Third Hokage.

First off, Dosu was far from retarded, in fact, in terms of actual planing ability, and logical action, Dosu showed more skill then Naruto and Sasuke combined (although thats not hard to do). Dosu did make a critical error when he challenged Gaara before fully becoming aware of his abilities, however, given his situation it was easy mistake to make.
Second, in Zaku's defense, Zaku certainly wasn't the brightest Oto nin, but as the member of his team entrusted with providing the largest amount of force behind an attack, it's not exactly a stretch to believe that his planing skill may have been lacking some, but even then he still managed to provide a surprise to Shino in their match despite being severely injured, and for that if nothing else he deserves some respect.
