Chiriku is one of the former twelve guardian ninja, and a close friend of Sarutobi Asuma. He is the head Monk at the Fire Temple which is a temple for the strongest monks in the Land of Fire.

Chiriku is outstanding when it comes to using taijutsu as well as being skilled in sealing jutsu. His most powerful technique is Thousand Armed Murder, a secret jutsu of the Fire Temple. He also has placed a large barrier over the Fire Temple.

Chiriku became head monk of the Fire Temple when the twelve guardian ninja disbanded due to a failed coup d'etat that was attempted by six of the twelve guardian ninja. When Hidan and Kakuzu of Akatsuki came to the Land of Fire looking for Uzumaki Naruto, they came upon the Fire Temple and decided to look for him there. Upon realizing that Naruto was not there, Kakuzu recognized Chiriku who was listed in the bingo book for thirty million ryo. This was not something that the greedy Kakuzu could pass up. Chiriku put up a good fight and was able to keep both Hidan and Kakuzu at bay by using Thousand Armed Murder against both of them. Eventually, Chiriku was overcome by the two and every monk in the temple aside from one (unknown to Hidan and Kakuzu) was killed. Kakuzu retrieved Chiriku's body and turned it in for the bounty that was on his head.
