The eldest child on Gaara's team, Temari, as well as Kankurou, is terrified of her youngest brother Gaara. When Gaara is away, she is a confident, strong genin, although not a bully like Kankurou. Despite her fear for Gaara, she can be caring towards him, but only if Gaara isn't riled up. In the beginning of Naruto Shippuuden we see her acting as the contact person between the Hidden Sand and Konoha as the two villages prepare for the next chuunin exams.
She has a deep dislike for war, and speaks her mind when her teacher Baki told his team about their mission to betray the Hidden Leaf during the chuunin exams. Despite her dislike, she has a very strong offense just like Gaara. Her enormous fan can execute a Slashing Wind attack, which can take on groups of enemies, and is equally effective in a duel. Just like Shikamaru, she tries to think ahead in battle to come up with tactics to better suit her abilities. She has three purple circles inscribed on her fan which she refers to as stars. The more she opens up her fan, the more stars are shown, and how more the fan's power increases. She can also use her fan to summon Kamatari and cause a lot of destruction in a short amount of time.
A lot of times Temari is seen in the presence of Shikamaru. In one of the first Shippuuden episodes, Naruto even asks the two if they're on a date, though they both immediately deny it. Temari also saves Shikamaru by defeating Tayuya during the Sasuke retrieval arc, and does not hesitate to lecture Shikamaru about his complaining and laziness.
